Curriculum Intent 

At the Willow Learning trust, our aim is for all pupils to be informed, articulate and empowered.     

This means that children will be given the knowledge and understanding of different religions so they can appreciate the diversity of beliefs and values locally, nationally and globally. 

 

Through our Religious Education curriculum, we aim: 

• To engage pupils in enquiring into ad exploring questions arising from the study of religion and belief, to promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. 

• To provide learners with knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other principal religious traditions and beliefs represented in Great Britain. 

• To develop their understanding of the ways in which beliefs positively influence people in their behaviour, practices and outlook. 

• To enable learners to become aware of their own beliefs and values and to have a positive attitude to the search for meaning and purpose in life. 

• To encourage learners to develop a positive attitude towards other people who hold religious beliefs different from their own. 

• To captivate young minds through our engaging delivery and a variety of approaches.  

• To open windows of opportunities by creating memorable moments.  

• To promote and celebrate equality and diversity.  

 

Curriculum Implementation 

Religious Education is delivered in a combination of half and termly units across the school depending on the year group. Appropriate progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary is ensured by following the Jigsaw Discovery RE scheme of work (sow). The subject is taught once a week for 60 minutes. The learning is recorded in a variety of ways from written work, drawings, class discussions, practical activities and photographs. There are whole school religious assemblies, which are taken by a vicar from our local church, once a week (KS1 & KS2). In addition to this, at Christmas each year group from year three upwards, sings a carol to the parents at our Christmas fair. We also endeavour to undertake several religious visits, outside of school or workshops/parent talks per year. These ensure that all children are provided with a variety of first-hand experiences to spark their curiosity and interest. 

 

Curriculum Impact 

Children in the Willow Learning Trust will leave Year 6 with an understanding of their own beliefs and those of others reflected within Great Britain. Our children will have an appreciation about other people’s faiths, feelings and beliefs whilst respecting these differences and have a sensitivity with those who have different beliefs from themselves. They will have an understanding of the influence of religion on individuals, families, values and traditions while exploring questions of meaning. This will help them to develop a sense of identity and belonging, preparing them for life as citizens in a plural, global society. The Willow Learning Trust offers opportunities for personal reflection and spiritual development. Religious Education makes a vital contribution to the school curriculum as it enables all pupils to develop, explore, understand and express their responses to spiritual and religious approaches to life. 

 

All class teachers must ensure that: 

• On chapter covers, the learning objective for every lesson is clearly stated and class teachers must decide and make a note in brackets next to the LO which lessons are practical.  

• RE is taught weekly.  

• Learning objectives must be highlighted. 

• All work must be stamped or receive a sticker. 

• All lessons must be recorded and any work which is not written must be evidenced with a photo and have a blurb about the lesson.
